Welcome to NOORDWOORD, the association for literary events in Groningen! Our mission is to put Groningen on the map as the place-to-be for literature and poetry, with vibrant festivals, bold new talent and a literary agenda that is always up-to-date.
Who we are
Our organisation was founded in 2009 as ‘Stichting Literaire Activiteiten Groningen’ (Foundation for Literary Events in Groningen, also known as ‘SLAG’). In 2019, we celebrated our ten-year anniversary! Here, we announced our new name NOORDWOORD, as well as the start of a special programme for young writers: Noordwoord Talent.
What we do
NOORDWOORD offers the online agenda for all activities around literature in Groningen, both city and province. You might also know us as the organisation behind several festivals such as:
- the local Poetry Week, which started as the Poetry Marathon in 2000
- poetry festival ‘Dichters in de Prinsentuin’, held since 1998
- festival for readers and writers ‘Het Grote Gebeuren’, held since 2009
We also award literary prizes. One of them is the yearly Prize for the Best Groninger Book, which is awarded for both fiction and non-fiction. Every two years, we award the Kees van der Hoefprijs to a person or organisation that has made an important contribution to the literary world in Groningen. Since 2017, NOORDWOORD organizes the biannual election of the Groninger City Poet, whom we also provide with assistance and guidance throughout their term.
Although many of our activities are mainly in Dutch, we are always on the lookout to include English-spoken readings, interviews and workshops to make our events more accessible for everyone.
Due to our many activities and the vital function of our organisation for the literary world in Groningen, the municipality and province of Groningen have named us Key Pillar for the Literary Arts. The Dutch Literary Foundation also supports us as one of the most important literary organisations in the Netherlands.
